Fourteen-year-old Casey Kaufhold of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, won the Senior Women’s Recurve division at USA Archery’s 2018 National Target Championships Aug. 9-10 in Dublin, Ohio. Casey, who will be a high school freshman this fall, beat a large field of the best women’s recurve archers in the country to win her first national championship competing at 70 meters.

At 14, Casey could compete against other Cub division archers, who are 12-14 years old, and who shoot targets 50 meters away. But if she wants to make the 2020 U.S. Olympic team that will compete in Tokyo, Casey has to shoot targets that are 70 meters away, and she must compete in the Senior Women’s division — three age groups above her own.

Casey’s 2-day combined score at the National Championships was 1305 out of a possible 1440. That score set a world record for the Cadet (age 15-17) age group. It also was one point better than Senior Women’s Recurve division runner-up Mackenzie Brown, who was the lone woman to represent the U.S. in archery at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. In addition, Casey’s score was 46 points better than five-time Olympian Khatuna Lorig, who earned mainstream notoriety for coaching Jennifer Lawrence in archery ahead of her role as Katniss Everdeen in the 2012 blockbuster movie “The Hunger Games.”

Trials for the 2020 U.S. Olympic archery team will begin in earnest next year, and Casey is considered a top prospect.
