The nationwide retailer chain Target is the latest business in the crosshairs of the anti-gun group Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. The group has petitioned the Minneapolis, Minn., based Target Corp. to ban guns in its stores and their effort quickly collected over 10,000 signatures.

The campaign was launched shortly after images of pro-gun activists took pictures open carrying firearms in one of the stores. Members and supporters of Open Carry Texas, an activist group in support of open carry in the Lone Star State, have garnered a reputation for visiting restaurants and stores en masse with rifles and shotguns slung over their shoulders. Pictures are taken, they spread on the internet, and anti-gun groups like the Bloomberg-funded Moms Demand Action find their next target.

Petitions like this have found success recently at Starbucks, Chipotle, and Sonic.

A Target spokeswoman, said that "the safety and security of our guests and team members is our highest priority." Target complies with local, state, and federal laws regarding open carry. That is the same policy that Starbucks, Chipotle, and Sonic followed.

After Chipotle released a statement asking its customers not to bring guns into their stores, an NRA statement calling the actions of Open Carry Texas “downright weird.” While open carrying, especially long guns, is bound to attract attention that isn’t always positive, it is legal and the NRA scrambled to apologize for the statement.

Adding to the story surrounding Target, a loaded 9mm handgun was found in the toy section of a Target Store in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The exact circumstances of how the gun came to be left there remain fuzzy. It was found by a store employee.
