P&Y Club Announces Policy Change to Velvet Entries

The Pope and Young Club recently announced a significant shift in policy on how the Club will address velvet antlered animals submitted for all-time entry into the Club’s Records Program. While the Club has accepted all species of velvet antlered animals since 1999, these trophies were never eligible for awards (top three animals in each recording period). Additionally, velvet trophies were not listed in the All-Time or Velvet Edition record books in the same manner as hard antlered animals. They were not ranked and were listed by recording period, rather than the largest scoring animal to the smallest scoring animal. Lastly, velvet antlered animals were not eligible for World Record status within their category.

Effective immediately, velvet antlered animals will be treated exactly like all other animals accepted into the Records Program. Additionally, and most importantly, velvet antlered animals will now be eligible for World Record status within their respective velvet category.

Olympic Medalist Wunderle Named Archery Head Coach at Mount Marty University

Two-time Olympic Medalist Vic Wunderle has one of the most impressive careers in U.S. archery history. He was named to the United States Archery team 25 times, with many National, World and Pan Am titles. In his outstanding years in USA Archery's Collegiate Archery Program, Wunderle won many titles at Texas A&M University.

Still an active competitor, Wunderle is returning to the collegiate scene as head coach of the Mount Marty Lancers. The Mount Marty University archery team has access to train at the NFAA Easton Yantkon Archery Center, where Wunderle will also assist with programs.

Mount Marty, part of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) has both a club archery team and a varsity team that offers scholarships. A newer program, the school has already racked up strong finishes at USA Archery national events and brought home All-American and All-American Academic honors.

P&Y Club Announces Position Statement on Cellular Trail Cameras

The Pope and Young Club, historically, has not viewed the use of trail cameras as a violation of the Rules of Fair Chase but with the invention of wireless trail cameras and other devices that can send real-time data to a hunter, all hunters need to consider how the use of these devices may affect fair-chase. While the use of a wireless trail camera is not automatically a violation of the Rules of Fair-Chase, using this technology to deliver real-time location data of the animal being hunted, would be a violation of the Rules of Fair Chase #7.

For clarification, receiving a wireless image (photo, video, GPS coordinate, etc.), which elicits an immediate (real-time) response, guiding the hunter to the animal would be considered a violation of the Rules of Fair-Chase. This would prohibit that animal from being eligible for entry into the Pope and Young Club's Records Program. Fair-Chase is defined as the ethical, sportsmanlike and lawful pursuit of free-ranging wild game animals that does not give the hunter an improper or unfair advantage over the animal.

Pope and Young to Celebrate Grand Re-Opening of the P&Y/Glenn St. Charles Museum

The Pope and Young Club will be celebrating the grand re-opening of the P&Y/Glenn St. Charles Museum of Bowhunting in conjunction with Chatfield’s Western Days celebration, Aug. 7, and 8, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 2020 marks the 53rd year of the celebration.
