Pope and Young Announces Bylaws Change to Accept Lighted Sights

Pope and Young had a recent bylaws change to allow animals taken with a bow-attached sight equipped with a light to illuminate pin(s) (battery operated) to be eligible for entry into the records program. Previously, any trophy whereby an electronic (battery operated) sight light that was attached to the bow was not allowed. This change maintains the prohibition against the use of any forward projecting light intended to illuminate a target in any way. The policy change is retroactive allowing any animal, whether previously measured or not, and that was ineligible due to the previous policy, to now be eligible for entry into the records program.

As technology changes, the Pope and Young’s records committee continually evaluates these technological advancements and routinely guides and advises the Board of Directors on items/issues that they feel may exceed what is allowed under the rules of fair chase.

“When it comes to technology, Pope and Young has always been the ethical voice for bowhunting,” said P&Y Executive Director Justin Spring. “However, it’s also very important that we show and educate bowhunters about these technologies and how they are not all inherently bad in every case. Hunting should be conducted under fair chase conditions, and we should continue educating bowhunters with discussions involving technological advancements and their proper use.”

USA Archery National Head Coach Search Update

USA Archery recently provided an update regarding its search for a new national head coach:

We would like to update you on where we are in the process for bringing in a new national head coach, to replace the outgoing KiSik Lee. Coach Lee is retiring at the end of 2024 after 18 years in the role.

USA Archery CEO Rod Menzer has created a three person Head Coach Search Advisory Group made up of an elite recurve athlete, an elite coach, and a former independent board member with multiple sports background, to assist in the search and selection process.

The aim of USA Archery is to hire the best coach available, and USA Archery has received a good number of resumes from some strong candidates, and beginning October 11, will begin the process of selecting those that will be interviewed over the following few weeks.

Until a coach is selected, USA Archery will continue to accept applications for the position.

Casey Kaufhold Breaks 36-year Olympic Medal Drought for Team USA Women

The Paris Games brought the first Olympic Medal to a Team USA woman this summer as Casey Kaufhold took home bronze with teammate, Brady Ellison, in the Mixed Team competition at the Summer Games. The last time the American women brought home an archery medal was Denise Parker, Melanie Skillman, and Debbie Ochs winning women’s team bronze at the 1988 Games in Seoul. With the Olympics returning to the United States in 4 years at 2028 the Los Angeles Games, Team USA is hopeful that Casey’s momentum will help spur American archers to more victories.

Vasque Boot Brand Discontinued

Red Wing Brands of America, Inc.recently issued a statement confirming the discontinuation of its Vasque outdoor boot brand, which is based in Minnesota and was founded in 1964.

“Together, we have done remarkable things across the outdoor industry,” said Red Wing in the statement. “But, this market has changed dramatically, particularly over the last several years. What consumers seek and how they want to both shop and buy have changed dramatically. These changes have forced us to re-evaluate our business proposition and opportunity. We have, therefore, made the difficult decision to sunset the Vasque brand.”

The company continued, “This is not a decision that we took lightly. In fact, we evaluated many possible strategic paths. In the end, however, we do not believe that there is a viable path forward. With limited resources, we believe it is best for us to focus on the incredible opportunities we see in our core business and brands at Red Wing Shoe Company.”
