ATA Announces 2022 Board of Directors Election Results

Voters in the 2022 Archery Trade Association (ATA) Board of Directors election retained one current Board member and installed two first-time Board members.

James McGovern, vice president of Rinehart Targets; Matthew Smith, president of SYKD Hunt; and Aaron Lucky, president of Easton Technical Products, Inc. were all elected by their peers during the recent election held Jan. 31 to March 1, 2022. McGovern was re-elected to the Board after originally joining the Board in April 2018. He was later elected as the vice chair in 2020. Newly elected Lucky and Smith said they’re ready for the chance to serve and dedicate themselves to the betterment of the industry.

Jeff Poole, ATA’s president and CEO, said the ATA will "call upon these representatives to help determine and influence ATA programs and the direction of the association. They will have a major impact on the future of our industry."

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with the people at the ATA and within the archery industry to address the many issues we face,” Lucky said. “I’m excited to get started!”

Smith had similar feelings. “I am grateful for the opportunity to serve on the ATA Board of Directors. I look forward to partnering with the Board to support and further-strengthen the archery industry.”

The four-year term for McGovern, Smith and Lucky will begin April 1, 2022, and end March 31, 2026. They will join Poole, the ATA’s senior directors and the current Board members at the 2022 ATA Board of Directors’ meeting held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, April 5-6.

“I look forward to working closely with these Board members as we address many important issues facing our industry in both the near and far term,” Poole said. “They will join a talented group of Directors who have an impressive amount of experience, expertise and passion for our industry and its future. I'm confident their service will help make the ATA stronger.”

Departing the ATA Board are Tom Driffill of Hoyt Archery and Ben Summers of T.R.U. Ball Release Products. Driffill was appointed as the Hoyt representative on the ATA Board of Directors in 2020; he replaced former Hoyt president Randy Walk when he retired. Summers served three consecutive terms on the ATA Board of Directors beginning March 2006. He served as the Board's vice chair from April 2010 to March 2016, and chairman from March 2016 to August 2020. The ATA thanked Driffill and Summers for their time and dedication to improving the industry while serving on the ATA’s Board of Directors.

USA Archery RED Program

USA Archery recently announced the Regional Elite Development (RED) Programroster for 2022. The RED Program is designed to develop recurve and compound athletes ages 13-17, through the USA Archery athlete competencies and High Performance Ethos, who are nationally and internationally competitive.

Athletes selected for this program are among the country’s most talented up-and-coming youth archers. They are dedicated to pursuing their dream to represent Team USA Archery on the world stage. RED archers have access to top-tier coaches from across the nation and resources to help make their dreams become reality.

The program includes several regional camps per year, which are 2-4 days each and include both recurve and compound athletes. Athletes and their personal coaches work with the RED Program Coaching staff. Archers in the RED Program shoot a minimum of 300-600 arrows per week while training at home and are highly encouraged to participate in USA Archery local, state and national events to gain tournament experience.

The RED program consists of six teams throughout the United States, divided by region.

“The RED Program is a great opportunity for athletes who desire to become internationally competitive to develop within the framework of USA Archery’s Athlete Development Model,” said Mary Emmons, USA Archery chief of sport performance and organizational development. “While participants will receive advanced coaching, the program also promotes teamwork and provides an introduction on how to develop within the pillars of the athlete competencies to achieve long-term success.”

Athletes interested in applying for the 2023 RED Program or other High Performance Programs should review the High Performance Program Guide for eligibility criteria and application details, or contact highperformance@usarchery.org for more information.

S3DA’s 7th Annual Indoor National Championship

On March 3-6, 2022, the S3DA Indoor National Championship was held at the Owensboro Convention Center in Owensboro, Kentucky. Approximately 1,000 S3DA youth archers from across the country converged on the range for their chance to be awarded the title of “S3DA National Indoor Champion” in their respective age division and class.

2022 marked the first year that S3DA held a stand-alone indoor national championship after essentially outgrowing the past collaboration with NFAA, which had previously been held during the NFAA Indoor Nationals. This year also marked the first-ever S3DA 300-Round because time and space constraints had previously forced S3DA to maintain a 150-Round.

S3DA Executive Director Holly Helton said, “2022 definitely marks a turning point for the Scholastic Archery Association. We’ve now outgrown venues, had our first ever 300-Round tournament, blown away our previous record for indoor registration, and branched off into an Eastern and Western series of events. The future is looking very bright for S3DA. We have an extremely dedicated group of staff, coordinators, and coaches across the country that continue to push this program to new heights. We could do none of this without them.”

NASP Launches Student Contributor Program

For the first time, students, families, coaches, coordinators and friends of NASP (National Archery in the Schools Program) can see the program through the eyes of student archers. NASP recently announced its new Student Contributor Program, which are articles written by student archers for student archers.

Any archer from an active NASP school was invited to apply to be a contributor, and 11 archers were selected. Contributors in this group are dispersed across the United States. The team of students contributors range from 5th – 12th grade and include both public and homeschool students.

These student archers have committed to share their experiences and passion for archery. Student contributors will submit one article per month on topics related to their experience with archery in the classroom, archery in everyday life, The 11 Steps to Archery Success, and NASP competitions.

During their months volunteering as student contributors, students will work with NASP staff and program partners to gain experience in online marketing and positions in the outdoor industry. Students will also be able to grow their resumes as they share their passion and experiences for archery.

Student articles will be featured on the Success & Tips section of the NASP website, as well as shared on social media.

Applications will open for NASP’s next round of student contributors in August. For more information about the NASP student contributor program, contact Stephanie Rustad, western regional coordinator, at stephanie@naspschools.org.
