There was nothing fancy or lavish about Black Gold’s beginnings in 1991. “It began as a basement business with insufficient lighting, a bare concrete floor and no heat or plumbing,” Black Gold founder Mike Ellig told Archery Business. “I ran a pro shop next door, and friend Keith Barner designed Black Gold’s original bowsight. It was the first sight to feature gang windage, which is now standard on all sights. At the time, though, it was quite revolutionary.
“Keith loved to invent, but didn’t want to juggle the business duties,” Ellig continued. “So, I agreed to pay him a per-sight royalty. The rest is history.”
Ellig shared that being an avid bowhunter and pro shop owner played tremendous roles in Black Gold’s early success. “Many products on the market have good concepts, yet lack quality and/or performance,” Ellig affirmed. “To make something truly remarkable, you must be passionate and test, correct and re-test. We’ve always been a customer-oriented company, and are always working to improve our products, marketing, customer service, manufacturing and all other ends of the business.”
New to Black Gold family for 2019 are two sights designed for very specific applications. First is the Ascent Whitetail. Sharing the same proven features as the Ascent Verdict, the Whitetail has a compact, lightweight profile available with a single vertical pin or three horizontal pins. Both options reduce clutter in the sight housing.
Also new is the Pro Sight. It offers tried-and-true features such as PhotoChromatic Technology, Dial-of-Death adjustment system and SkyCoil, but with the exciting addition of Black Gold’s new Wing Truss Dovetail System and CNC-machined Pro Sight pins.
Black Gold started in Bozeman, Montana. Today, it builds and ships all of its bowsights from Belgrade, Montana. The sights are 100 percent American made.
